Be a Good Neighbour!

Yellowhead County encourages you to “Be A Good Neighbour” this winter!

Winter in Alberta can pose challenges for seniors and people with physical disabilities. Clearing snow from steps, sidewalks, and driveways can be frustrating or impossible. Keeping access areas clear and safe is important for emergency responders and people that assist housebound individuals.

Yellowhead County’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is encouraging residents to take part of the Be a Good Neighbour campaign as well as recognize the good samaritans who have offered their help as part of this initiative!

This program encourages community groups, friends, and neighbours to shovel the private walkways and driveways of seniors in need and others who are not physically capable of shoveling their own sidewalks. This program is intended to assist seniors and community members on fixed incomes with limited human resources available to them.

2017 Winners_Leakvolds

Last winter, the county received 12 volunteer nominations that were entered into a draw. The winners were Keith and Lana Leakvold (pictured left) from Wildwood. They received a Pizza Dinner for two. As well, all of the Be a Good Neighbour volunteers previously nominated received a touque and a pair of gloves as a thank you for their kindness.

Any one person or group can step-up and take part, including junior and senior high school students, clubs, church and youth groups, etc. Volunteers who take part help spread goodwill within their communities and remind us that sometimes it’s important to ask for help—and even better to lend a generous hand.

Those who would like to recognize their neighbours are encouraged to fill out a Good Neighbour nomination form. The forms can be picked up from the Entwistle, Evansburg, Wildwood, and Niton Junction Libraries; the Yellowhead County Offices; and the grocery store in Peers. This year’s draw prize includes a backpack and two giftcards, and will be held on April 2, 2018.
