Community Transportation Study
Posted in News Releases
Yellowhead County has contracted Opus International Consultants Ltd. to assess the social transportation needs of Yellowhead County residents. The study will look into the current and future needs of residents, services currently available, and solutions that have been used in similar municipalities.
“Having access to good and reliable transportation is essential to living a healthy, active and connected life”, explains Wendy Robinson, Yellowhead County’s Family and Community Support Services Supervisor. “Without it, some of our residents find it difficult or impossible to access some of the community amenities and services that many of us take for granted.”
Proper transportation allows people to engage in the many services that they need to live a full productive life, such as getting to medical appointments, shopping, and taking part in social activities within their community.
Social transportation – transportation that is made available to the public in order to reduce barriers and isolation and ensure access to essential services – is something Yellowhead County is looking to address in a new study slated to take place this year.
“Social transportation is a growing concern, considering the aging population within Yellowhead County,” explains Wendy Robinson, Yellowhead County’s Family and Community Support Services Supervisor. “In order to understand the challenges that our residents currently face, and will have to face in the future, we need to start planning for practical solutions now.”
Yellowhead County has contracted Opus International Consultants Ltd. to assess the social transportation needs of Yellowhead County residents. Opus International Consultants Ltd. has a strong track record providing municipalities with high quality transit plans and solutions.
“We need to base our goals on sound information and realistic expectations,” explains Robinson for the county’s decision to hire the company to carry out the study.
The study will look into the current and future needs of residents, services currently available to Yellowhead County residents, and solutions that have been used in similar municipalities. It will include recommendations for strategies to address short-term, mid-term and long-term goals.
The study will include consultations with community residents to understand the social transportation needs and challenges as well as capacity for solutions.
Yellowhead County has an existing Social Transportation Policy. This policy acknowledges the variety of needs and uses for transportation in the County. The Wildwood Legion is provided with funds to operate the Community Connector Bus through the existing social transportation policy. The upcoming study will consider existing services and programs when developing recommendations for future planning.
The study will take place through the summer and fall, with recommendations presented to Council in October. For more information on this project, contact Wendy Robinson at the Yellowhead County Community Services Office in Wildwood.
