Web Map Tips

When I try to install the viewer, I receive a message saying I must be an administrator to install this program.

Both the SVG viewer and the Java installs require that you be an administrator on your computer. Try the Java viewer first; most computers will have a form of Java installed on them. If you cannot view either viewer, you will need to contact an administrator for your network. If you are on a home computer check your computer's help files to see how to log on as an administrator.

I've installed the viewer but only part of Web Map shows up when I launch it.

Some systems may require a reboot after installing the viewer, try rebooting your system and launching Web Map again.

I've installed the viewer but cannot launch Web Map.

Depending on your system your firewall or virus scanner might be blocking Web Map. Try shutting them down and launching Web Map again.

Will Web Map run on Macintosh and Linux operating systems?

Yes, but only using the Java viewer.

What is the difference between the SVG viewer and the Java viewer?

The main difference is the background map file in which the map is presented. The SVG file is only available on Windows operating systems right now. The Java viewer presents the map in a CGM file format, which is available for all operating systems.

When I click on a feature nothing happens.

Make sure you don't have a pop-up stopper blocking the pop-up information window.

When I print off the map the street names are not on the map.

In each Web Map theme there is a section in the Legend called "Labels". That legend entry contains street names, addresses and other labels for printing. Turn on the desired labels, then print the map.

When I use the 2004 Ortho Image it takes a long time for the image to appear on the map.

The closer you are zoomed in on the map before selecting the 2004 Ortho Image, the faster the image will display.

What should I do if the map seems to take more than 5 minutes to load?

If you are waiting for a map for more than 5 minutes, close the web page by clicking the 'x' in the upper right corner, and re-launch Web Map.
